DALLAS - Thousands of packages of birth control pills are being recalled by Qualitest Pharmaceuticals because of packaging errors.

Company officials say some of the pill blisters were rotated 180 degrees, so the tablets are now out of order.

Texas Health Dallas gynecologist Dr. Jay Staub said that means thousands of women may be taking the wrong strength hormone on the wrong day.

The consequences of taking the pills incorrectly could be unintended pregnancy; there could be irregular bleeding, Staub said. Those are the primary things that we're looking for.

Six generic products with dozens of lot numbers are affected. The products were sold under the names Cyclafem, Gildess, Orsythia, Previfem and Tri-Previfem.

Officials said the pills don't pose any immediate health risks on their own.

There are women who are using birth control because maybe they shouldn't be pregnant, Dr. Staub said. For them, unintended pregnancy could be potentially dangerous.

Gynecologists urge women who have the recalled pills to use alternate birth control methods until they can fill a new prescription.
