HIGHLAND PARK ― News 8 has been following David Arnwine since Tuesday's earthquake as he tried to track down his wife's whereabouts and condition. Now he's trying to arrange her funeral.

Amidst the frustrating phone tag of trying to find his wife after the earthquake, David Arnwine paused to talk of her excitement about going on the adventure of a lifetime in Haiti.

Jean Arnwine was a research coodinator at Texas Retina Associates in Dallas. She volunteered for the trip at the request of Dr. Gary Fish, one of the eye surgeons in the practice, after one of the team members dropped out.

She's been wanting to do this for a long time, David Arnwine said. They had someone who had always been going, and then she decided not to go. So he asked Jean to go with him, and she jumped at the chance to go.

David Arnwine had communication with his wife while she was on the trip, and her excitement about the work she was doing was evident.

She probably had about 800 pairs of glasses to take down there with her to fit people with, he said. She said there was one old guy, and the only glasses they could find to fit him were purple.

(Jean) said he was so excited he could see, he didn't even care, David Arnwine said. (Jean) said it was the neatest thing in the world.

When the eye clinic the team of 12 was working in collapsed during the quake, Jean Arnwine sufferred internal injuries.

A video taken by a news crew in Haiti shows Jean Arnwine laying on a stretcher in a crowded medical tent near the Port-au-Prince airport.

Fish was by her side fanning her face. Help for her came too late.

Jean Arnwine was not a member of Highland Park United Methodist Church which provides resources for this global outreach. But she is part of their family now.

And David Arnwine, who would've celebrated 31 years of marriage with his wife in March, said he will mend his broken heart, with a treasure of memories too numerous to count.
