COLLIN COUNTY -- A church in Collin County has been destroyed by a fire.
A man walking his dog through the neighborhood noticed flames coming from Christ is King (Iglesia Cristo es Rey) in St. Paul, near Wylie, just before 4:30 a.m. Tuesday.
News 8 has learned that there is a food pantry at the church as well.
The Wylie, Murphy, Plano, Lucus,Parker andSachse FireDepartments arrived to help put out the flames. A Sachse firefighter fell six feet off a ladder and was taken to a Plano hospital with back pain. He had bruises but is expected to be okay.
Senior Pastor of the church, Tito Vasquez, said it's tough seeing the damage the fire did to his church. The small congregation of 45 people was supposed to host a pastor fromGuatemala Tuesday during a special service.
Firefighters say putting out the flames proved to be a challenge. It took about two hours.
'The church is cut up into various areas so it's making it difficult to find every part that's on fire,' Wylie Fire Chief Brent Parker said.
Members of the church are now absorbing what happened and waiting for answers on what sparked it. They hope they can somehow rebuild what was tragically lost.
For now the church will be looking for a temporary place to hold service. The church had been leasing the building from Amazing Grace Fellowship Baptist Church for the past five years.
Tragically, neither of the owners who rent out the building have insurance, saying it was too costly.
