KELLER Hundreds of people lined the streets of Keller on Saturday to remember hometown hero Staff Sgt. Alex Viola, who was killed in action in Afghanistan.
From friends to strangers, they offered a final salute at his funeral at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church.
Viola was remembered as a loving uncle and a workout fan, who was well known at Crossfit in Grapevine.
He was a man who took the lessons he learned in the gym to the battlefield, where he served as an elite Green Beret.
'The machine-like nature in which Alex attacked a workout could only be described as sheer domination,' said a fellow soldier. 'He applived this same aggressive, tenacious work ethic to everything he did. Failure was not an option for him.'
Boy Scouts, church members and total strangers lined the funeral procession route with American flags as Sgt. Viola's casket traveled to its final resting place at Bluebonnet Hills Memorial Park in Colleyville.
It was a stirring example of a community showing its support for a fallen hero and his family.
