GARLAND -- A 20-year-old Garland man was arrested Tuesday morning for intoxication manslaughter after the passenger in his vehicle was killed in a crash.

Zachary McCombs was driving a 2008 Ford Focus south on Highway 78 just before 5:20 a.m. when he attempted to make a left on to Town Center Boulevard in front of a north bound Jeep Cherokee driven by a 49-year-old man from Dallas.

The Jeep struck the Ford, killing the passenger in the vehicle, 22-year-old Taylor Smith of Plano.

Investigators believe alcohol was a factor in the crash, according to a Garland police press release. McCombs was taken to Plano Medical Center, and then taken into custody upon his release.

McCombs is currently in the Garland Detention Center. His bond has not been set. He also had a warrant for his arrest from Mesquite for minor in possession of alcohol.

The driver of the Jeep was not injured in the crash.
