IRVING The Irving ISD school board night took up a controversial measure Monday night that would have permitted teachers to tote guns to campus.
One man who identified himself as an Irving teacher spoke up at the meeting, criticizing the proposal that would let teachers and administrators bring weapons to school as long a they leave those firearms in their vehicles.
"What sounds safe about a parking lot full of unattended guns?" the teacher asked. "It's not the job of our campus security to patrol our parking lots to make sure our cars and guns are safe. It is the job of out campus security to patrol our schools to make sure our teachers and students are safe."
After that, the board canceled consideration of this measure.
The idea isn't dead, though. Board members will review it and possibly reconsider the proposal as early as May.
