DALLAS — Any day now, 46-year-old Angela Tortorice is expecting to be certified by the Guinness Book of World Records.
"I've sent all the documentation in," she said. "I know they're very particular, so I'm really crossing my fingers and waiting for a positive answer from them."
What's her accomplishment? How about completing the most marathons by a woman in one year.
When she crossed the finish line in Pocatello, Idaho on August 31, it was the completion of her 129th marathon in 365 days. That computes to 3,379 miles.
"I have a girlfriend that just keeps calling me, 'Nuts! You’re nuts!'" Tortorice said. "So I get a little bit of that."
She averaged more than two marathons a week, a pace that has boosted her total number of marathons to more than 420.
Believe it or not, she's still way down the list.
"Well there are a couple of guys that have over 1,000 marathons and there are several men that have 500," she said. "One of my close girlfriends is about to reach 500 herself."
Tortorice estimates there are 15 to 20 women who have actually run more than she has — but not in a 365-day span. That record belongs to her right now.
Thanks to her running, Tortorice was singled out by Secret deodorant, which used her as an example of personal accomplishment and positive attitude.
"It wasn't necessarily a commercial, but they did a clip on me... a fearless clip... they were promoting a new scent," Tortorice said. "I'm just using my marathons basically as my training and going at a very slow speed just to make the goal. So really, just trying to baby and pamper myself to get through that number.”
Tortorice said she wore out eight to 10 pairs of shoes while chasing her record, but the toughest part may be travel costs and entry fees — although the end result is priceless.
By the way, over the weekend, she ran two more marathons.
