Dallas Stars get nine players in 2014 NHL Draft

The following information about the 2014 NHL Draft was provided by the Dallas Stars.


PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania  - Dallas Stars General Manager Jim Nill selected a total of nine players in the 2014 NHL Draft held at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, including eight players Saturday in rounds two through seven. Below is a review of all the selections: 

Julius Honka - Defenseman (First Round, 14th Overall)

Honka, 18, played his first season of North American hockey in 2013-14. In 62 regular season games for Swift Current of the Western Hockey League, the right-handed shooting defenseman posted 56 points (16-40=56), which paced all team defensemen. In the postseason, The 5-foot-10, 180-pound defenseman was tied for third on the team with two goals (2-0=2) in six games.

A native of Jyvaskyla, Finland, he won a gold medal for his country at the 2014 World Jr. Championship posting one assist (0-1=1) in seven games. He also won a bronze medal for Finland at the 2013 Under-18 World Junior Championship posting four points (1-3=4) in seven games.

Brett Pollock - Left Wing (Second Round, 45th Overall)

Pollock, 18, posted 55 points (25-30=55) in 71 regular season games for Edmonton of the Western Hockey League. En route to winning the Memorial Cup with Edmonton in 2014, he led the team in goals (11) and was tied for fourth in points (11-9=19) in 21 games played. The 6-foot-2, 182-pound forward has spent his last two seasons in Edmonton, posting a total of 59 points (27-32=59) in 111 regular season games.

Alexander Peters - Defenseman (Third Round, 75th Overall)

Peters, 17, recorded nine points (3-6=9) in 50 regular season games in 2013-14 for Plymouth of the Ontario Hockey League. In five playoff games, he did not record a point and compiled 10 penalty minutes. The six-foot-four, 205-pound native of Blyth, Ontario posted 12 points (0-12=12) in 58 regular season games during the 2012-13 regular season for Plymouth.

Michael Prapavessis - Defenseman (Fourth Round, 105th Overall)

Prapavessis, 18, appeared in 47 regular season games for Toronto Lakeshore of the Ontario Junior Hockey League, posting 55 points (5-50=55) and only two penalty minutes. The 6-foot-1, 173-pound native of Mississauga, Ontario won several OJHL Awards in 2013-14 including Best Defenseman, First All-Star Team and Most Gentlemanly Player.

Brent Moran - Goaltender (Fourth Round, 115th Overall)

Moran, 17, posted a 14-19-2-2 record in 40 games played for Niagara of the Ontario Hockey League. In seven postseason games, he posted a record of 3-4 with a 2.86 goals against average and a .921 save percentage. The six-foot-four, 186-pound native of Ottawa, Ontario was a member of Canada's bronze medal winning team at the 2014 Under-18 World Championship.

Miro Karjalainen - Defenseman (Fifth Round, 135th Overall)

Karjalainen, 18, spent the 2013-14 regular season playing for Jokerit U-18 of the Finland Jr. Under-18 League. In 38 games, he posted eight points (1-7=8). The six-foot-five, 205-pound right-handed shooting defenseman added five points (2-3=5) in 11 postseason contests.

Aaron Haydon - Defenseman (Sixth Round, 154th Overall)

Haydon, 18, registered 16 points (5-11=16) in 61 regular season games for Niagara of the Ontario Hockey League in 2013-14. He also competed for the United States at the 2013 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament. The six-foot-two, 185-pound native of Plymouth, Michigan recorded 10 penalty minutes in seven postseason games.

John Nyberg - Defenseman (Sixth Round, 165th Overall)

Nyberg, 17, spent the 2013-14 regular season playing for Frolunda in Sweden, splitting time between their Junior-18 and Junior-20 teams. The six-foot-two, 180-pound defenseman is a native of Sweden will turn 18 on July 14.

Patrick Sanvido - Defenseman (Seventh Round, 195th Overall)

Sanvido, 18, has skated for the Windsor Spitfires in the OHL the last two seasons. During the 2013-14 campaign, he posted eight points (1-7=8) in 64 games for Windsor and appeared in four playoff games for the club. The 6-foot-5, 220-pound defenseman from Guelph, Ontario led all Windsor defensemen with 82 penalty minutes last season.
