MANSFIELD - A couple weeks ago at the Texas Relays, Mansfield Legacy senior Shelbi Vaughan threw a discus farther than any high school girl ever has, setting a national record.
And she made it sound easy.
"It was really effortless," Vaughan said. "Like, I had no idea once I threw that, that I broke the national record."
Her throw was 191 feet, 6 inches. And just days after setting the new national record, Vaughan threw a discus even further, in practice. Before she graduates, Vaughan hopes to hit the 200-foot plateau.
It's no surprise that she has earned an athletic scholarship at Texas A&M. What is surprising, based on her track and field accomplishments, is that her scholarship is for volleyball.
Ted Madden has the story.
