The WFAA Bloggers' NFL mock draft

1. Indianapolis Colts -- QB Robert Griffin III (Baylor)

Usually when you're deciding between two things (or taking sides), your intention is to demean the side you are not selecting. In the political arena, this is referred to as "mudslinging." This is not a “mud slinging” campaign aimed at Andrew Luck. I believe Andrew Luck will have a very long, charmed NFL career and I fully expect him to be one of the league's top ten quarterbacks almost the instant he steps on an NFL field. This also is not a case of me simply taking the contrarian view.

I truly believe Robert Griffin III will be a better NFL quarterback than Andrew Luck. Andrew Luck will be very good (think Matt Ryan). Robert Griffin will be great (think Drew Brees...with really fast legs). Griffin has more college starts (the most important stat), a better completion percentage, more yards per attempt, and a higher quarterback rating than Andrew Luck. Griffin did all this with what we all can agree was a lesser team surrounding him.

Griffin also adds the extra dimension of being able to gash a defense even when they have a play defensed perfectly -- because of his legs. Andrew Luck is not slow, but he's also not 4.41 fast. Griffin ran for over 2,000 yards in his career. Luck ran for just under 1,000.

The main and most important difference between Luck and Griffin is arm strength. Griffin simply has a stronger arm and uses it to stretch defenses to their breaking point, finding windows and seams that just shouldn't be options to put a ball through for average to above average quarterbacks. Luck is more of a tactician who excels at timing and rhythm with his short- to medium-depth passes.

Indianapolis has a real decision to make. It's not as cut and dry as “just take the guy everybody says we're going to take”. The real value in this draft lies at the #2 pick. Were I starting my team and I have the say in the matter, give me Robert Griffin III. You can have the rest. -- MIKE MARSHALL

We're less than a month away from the NFL Draft... and while some of you may scoff at an opening line like that, this is as good a time as any to talk prospects.

There is no element of talent acquisition more important than the draft -- those seven picks are a gift, and a gift teams treasure.

For evidence, just look at any trade involving a draft pick. Outside of truly premium players and (mediocre to slightly above-average) quarterbacks, most players will fetch somewhere between a fourth and sixth-rounder.

DeMeco Ryans, consistently one of the league's best interior linebackers, recently went from Houston to Philadelphia for a #4. Teams take the process very seriously, and draft day impacts the organization's destiny over the course of decades.

Our team of five bloggers rotated in making these picks. Each selection is accompanied by a picture, explanation of the pick and summary of the player. We're drafting not necessarily to duplicate the actual draft, but based on an evaluation of which players SHOULD be picked.
