ARLINGTON - The Texas Rangers released a statement Monday from Dave Barnett, the team's play-by-play television broadcaster, announcing he will be taking an indefinite leave of absence for health reasons.
"I want to thank everyone for your kind sentiments and words of encouragement over the last couple of weeks," Barnett said in the statement. "It has meant a lot to me during what has been a very difficult time. Effective immediately, for health reasons I will be taking an indefinite leave of absence from my broadcasting duties that I expect to last for the remainder of the season."
During a game on June 18 against the Padres, Barnett began speaking nonsensically during the broadcast. Barnett has been out of the broadcast booth since that game, and he told The Dallas Morning News a week later his preliminary diagnosis was a "complicated migraine."
According to the release, Steve Busby will continue doing television play-by-play on Fox Sports Southwest and TXA21, while Matt Hicks will continue to work with Eric Nadel on the Texas Rangers ESPN Radio Network.
