ARLINGTON -- The attorneys representing Texas Rangers outfielder Nelson Cruz issued a statement Thursday denying that Cruz had any involvement with performing-enhancing drugs.
"We are aware of certain allegations and inferences made in the January 29, 2012 edition of the Miami New Times," his law firm stated. "To the extent that these allegations and inferences refer to Nelson, they are denied."
The statement from his Cruz's law firm, Farrell and Reisinger, comes two days after Cruz' name appeared in a report which listed him as one of six major league players connected to a Florida anti-aging clinic called Biogenesis.
At the time, Major League Baseball issued a statement saying, in part, "We are in the midst of an active investigation and are gathering and reviewing information. We will refrain from further comment until this process is complete."
A report by the Miami New Times showed that Cruz had spent $4,000 last season for products from the clinic, and the New Times alleges sold performance-enhancing drugs including human growth hormone (HGH), testosterone, and anabolic steroids.
When contacted today, the Rangers had no response to Thursday's statement from his attorney.
Spring training will begin in Surprise, Arizona in less than two weeks.
