DALLAS, TX, - Monday of Super Bowl XLV week was Tiana West's lucky day. The 9th grader from Sachse High School won an essay contest and tickets to the game. The contest was sponsored by Verizon Super Bowl essay contest.
"My essay was about my dad how he got kidney disease,” Tiana says. “It was a very hard time in our lives. I wrote about that and how a family had to help our dad.”
The contest was open to legal residents of Texas who are between the ages of 13 and 18 and had to have their parent's or legal guardian's permission to participate.
"She just talked about my end stage renal disease and how it affected our family," her father Andre Henson says. "I really didn't know she felt the way she wrote about it but it made me feel real good that she was trying to pick up the slack."
"It was kind of hard but I could write about," Tiana says. "It means a lot."
And now she's going to Super Bowl and her dad will be her guest.
"We're going to the Super Bowl, yeah," Henson says. "It's awesome. I never expected it. She told me she was writing it. I blew it off. I was like yeah baby, go ahead. I really didn't know what she wrote about until much later.
"I always wanted to go the Super Bowl and Cowboys Stadium,” Tiana says. “It's awesome!”
It will be her first trip inside the stadium. By the way, she's a Steelers fan.
