OXNARD, California -- The rash of injuries during Dallas Cowboys camp has hit another level after sources say tight end Jason Witten suffered a spleen injury in the preseason opener against the Raiders.
During the Cowboys' second offensive possession of the game, quarterback Tony Romo was under pressure and threw an outlet pass to Witten. Raider linebacker Rolando McClain made a big hit on Witten. He seemed phased but came back later in the game and later caught a pass.
He was later further examined and tests revealed internal bleeding. He now could miss the rest of the preseason and possibly the season opener.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones abruptly canceled his weekly radio show, adding further speculation on the extent of the injury.
The Cowboys are now desperately thin at the tight end position with only three other players on the roster. Fourth-year player John Phillips missed the last week with a sprained ankle. The other two tight ends are rookies, Flower Mound high school grad and former OU standout James Hanna was the Cowboys sixth round draft pick. Andrew Szczerba was undrafted out of Penn State.
