CORSICANA — Corsicana has always been famous for the Collin Street Bakery, which has been serving up fruitcakes since 1896.
This week, however, the hottest item in town is a Louis Vasquez T-shirt.
“These shirts, we can't keep them on the shelf,” said Misty Chandler, who is making sure the town has enough of the shirts.
Vasquez was a third round draft pick for the San Diego Chargers in 2009 before signing as a free agent with the Denver Broncos last off-season.
This year, he’s a guard for the AFC Champions, and Corsicana and is his home town.
This city is going all out for the Super Bowl this year. So much so that they're starting a celebration two days before the big game.
Friday is Louis Vasquez Day.
At the local HEB supermarket, they're selling a Vasquez cake. It's also where his mother, Beatriz Vasquez, works.
“As a mother, I’m very proud of my children anyway, but this is like I’m living a dream,” she said. “I'm living the American dream.”
It's easy to spot the home of Louis' father on the north side of town, thanks to a 10-foot inflatable Bronco which sits in his front yard.
“It’s just been crazy,” said Fabian Vasquez. “This whole season has been crazy, but we're very proud, and we're excited about going.”
Dave Henigan, Louis Vasquez' former high school coach who is now the head coach at Grapevine, said Vasquez towered over his teammates.
“I'll never forget the first time I met him. He walked into my office and he literally filled up the door,” Henigan said. “He's wide, he's tall, and he blocks the sunlight."
Sunlight this city hopes will shine brightly on the Broncos this Sunday.
