WACO — Construction of Baylor's new stadium is only around 20 percent complete, but school officials are eager to show off its progress.

"The field elevation down here was basically the existing grade of the site when we took over," explained Jeff Horn, senior superintendent of the construction project.

"In 15 months, Baylor football will be at Baylor Stadium on the banks of the Brazos River," Baylor president Ken Starr added.

Thanks to dry weather, the project remains right on schedule. "What happens next when we start our precast — which will be in June — we'll set precast on those rakers and creates your seating terrace," Horn said.

The $250 million project will be ready for the 2014 season with a seating capacity of 45,000.

Baylor is the only team left in the Big 12 Conference that doesn't have its football stadium on campus. That will soon change, and with more than 40 million people passing by on nearby Interstate 35 every year, it should do wonders for the image of Baylor football.

"Right now it's 42 million people a year," said Baylor head coach Art Briles. "In a year-and-a-half from now, it might be 44 million. That's 44 million people that are going to drive by and look over there and see Baylor Stadium and they're going to say, 'Those folks are doing it right.'"

Starr said fundraising continues, and says the project has now reached the $100 million mark in private support.

"It's a combined effort of a lot of people who had a lot of vision, a lot of boldness, a lot of effort, and a lot of giving," Briles said. "We're indebted to everyone who made it happen. It's a great asset for Baylor, for Waco, for Central Texas and for the State of Texas, because it's progress."

Baylor has enjoyed the national spotlight since Robert Griffin III won the Heisman Trophy. Now they're hoping a new stadium will bring them more success... and even more attention.
