LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — The longest serving horse in Texas Tech's Masked Rider school pride and spirit program will retire due to a leg injury that hampers running.

Officials at the Lubbock school on Wednesday announced the retirement of 13-year-old Midnight Matador. The animal since 2002 has been the mount for Tech's Masked Rider, galloping around the field when the team scores.

Midnight Matador was sidelined for medical reasons during last Saturday's 49-14 victory over No. 13 West Virginia. Tech's Raider Red costumed mascot filled in by leading the team to the field on a motorcycle.

Midnight Matador will honored Nov. 10 during Tech's final home game of the season against Kansas.

School officials will consider other horses for the Masked Rider program.
