Monte Kiffin is the new defensive coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys, team sources confirmed to WFAA Sports' Joe Trahan Friday.

Team officials identified the 72-year-old as their top choice for the position earlier this week. Kiffin reportedly met with owner Jerry Jones and head coach Jason Garrett at Valley Ranch this week as well.

He's spent the last three years working as the defensive coordinator at the University of Southern California, where his son Lane is the head coach.

The addition of Kiffin likely signals a transition away from the predominantly 3-4 defense the Cowboys have run since Bill Parcells arrived in 2003. Kiffin ran a 4-3, Tampa Cover 2 scheme for many years with the Buccaneers.

In addition to stints at the Universities of Nebraska, Arkansas, Tennessee and North Carolina State, the veteran has served as linebacker coach for the Green Bay Packers, the Buffalo Bills, the Minnesota Vikings and the New York Jets. He's been a defensive coordinator in Minnesota, New Orleans and Tampa Bay, where he orchestrated the influential Tampa Cover 2 scheme.

The team's assistant coaches have been told they will need to interview to keep their jobs; some are expected to end up elsewhere.

Team sources told George Riba a press conference likely will not happen until the full staff is in place. After the season ended with a loss to division rival Washington in week 17, owner Jerry Jones said the atmosphere at Valley Ranch would be "uncomfortable."

Former defensive coordinator Rob Ryan was fired at the beginning of the week.
