SAN ANTONIO -- It must be in the Ryan DNA. Buddy was long on bluster and coaching skills, and he's passed on that "stir the pot" gene to his sons Rob and Rex.
With the Cowboys getting back to work in San Antonio, the big buzz is new Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan calling out the Eagles.
"I can't say I don't like that. You know what I mean? He's still our [defensive] coordinator. I've got to roll with whoever is in charge," said linebacker Bradie James. "If that's the way he wants to approach it, its our job to go out there and execute and make sure he doesn't look [like] a fool."
Earlier in the week Ryan called out the undisputed champs of free agency and the Cowboys NFC east rival, the Philadelphia Eagles, when he vowed Dallas would kick the butt (he used the 3-letter term) of the "all-hype-team." When asked, Ryan wouldn't confirm he was talking about the Eagles, but he didn't have to. After they landed the biggest free agent available in Nnamdi Asomugha, not to mention a host of others, the hype Ryan referred to has been all pointed toward Philly.
"Rob Ryan's a confident guy. One of the things we like to instill in our players, our coaches, and our football team is confidence. And he has a track record of doing that," said Cowboys head coach Jason Garret.
But it was obvious, that's as far as he'd jump into the fray.
"Beyond that, no real comment from me on that," Garret said.
Ryan and the word "swagger" have been mentioned more than just about any Cowboy in recent memory. His confidence is as sizable as his girth.
"You accept the challenge. Its always different challenges and we just so happen to have one guy that throws 'em out there," said James. "So we got to pay attention to whatever's in the media. So, just try not to talk to him too often."
Love to help you there Bradie, but don't count on it. On a team where most are well-schooled in avoiding actually saying how they feel, Rob Ryan is a media darling.
Now if we can just get him to promise a Super Bowl victory like his brother Rex, then we'd really be on to something.
