Darvish closer to return?

Yu Darvish threw a bullpen session Tuesday afternoon at Globe Life Park. He reportedly threw 86 pitches. Manager Ron Washington said there is no plan in place for the ace, who is currently on the 15-day DL.

Washington said he, GM Jon Daniels, pitching coach Mike Maddux and bullpen coach Andy Hawkins will meet to decide what the next step is. They’ll announce the plan when they’re ready, he said. Darvish is scheduled to come off the DL on April 5.

McCutchen called up

The Rangers recalled relief pitcher Daniel McCutchen from Round Rock Tuesday. Manager Ron Washington said McCutchen will serve as the long relief man in the Texas bullpen.

“He’s a veteran guy, we need a long [relief] guy,” Washington said. “He does have some Big League time, he attacks the zone, he’s not afraid. When we’re in a pinch I think he’s the guy that can get us the innings we need.”

Briefly

Chris Gimenez was designated for assignment. Gimenez was a late waiver claim from Oakland that was acquired too close to the start of the season to send him down before Opening Day.

Michael Kirkman cleared waivers and was outrighted to Round Rock.
