ARLINGTON, TX - If Rangers third baseman Michael Young expects to attend his seventh Major League All-Star game this year, he will need to win a popularity contest.
"Anytime the fans are involved, they're going to pick who they want to pick, so yeah, it is a popularity contest," says Young. "We'll see how it all shakes down. You know it's an honor that Joe Girardi put me on that list in the first place, we'll see how it shakes out."
Young is on a ballot that can be found at Texasramgers.com. He's one of five players that fans will chose to go to the All-Star game. Campaigning is not for him.
"No, that's not me man," Young says. "You know I’d love to go to the All-Star game again. Every year I’ve gone, I’ve had a great time, I’ve got some great friends that seem to kind of see there every year. Anytime your team is having success, you want to send as many as you possibly can.
This is the ninth year that major league baseball has put the 34th and final All-Star spot up for a vote. Second baseman Ian Kinsler was the first Rangers player to put on the ballot last year. He came in second. This year, Michael Young is facing tough competition.
Young is on the ballot with Nick Swisher of the Yankees, Kevin Youkilis of the Red Sox's, Paul Konerko of the White Sox's and Delmon Young of the Minnesota Twins. And while he doesn't want to campaign, others are stepping in to help out.
"He's been an All-Star for years, year in and year out," says Rangers second baseman Ian Kinsler. "I just think that's where he belongs."
"He gives everything he has everyday out there," says Rangers manager Ron Washington. "His main goal is to win every single day, his main goal is to do what he needs to do for his team to win and he's a team player. I think all those things put together to me says that Michael Young is an All-Star.
The winner will be announced on Thursday, July 8th.
