NEWARK, N.J. -- The Cowboys are a universal underdog in their opener against a Jets team that came one win away from going to the Super Bowl for the last two seasons.  But the Cowboys do have history on their side.

Dallas is the best team in league history on opening day according to win percentage.  The Cowboys are 34-16-1 (.677) in season openers.

That includes a string of 17 straight opening day wins starting in 1965.  In more recent history, Dallas has won three of the last four openers, and were a holding penalty away from beating the Redskins last season that would have made it four of the last four.

Here are the league leaders based on opening day winning percentage:

  1. Dallas....................34-16-1 .677
  2. Denver ..................32-18-1 .637
  3. Jacksonville ............10-6-0 .625
  4. N.Y. Giants............49-32-5 .599
  5. Chicago ................51-35-5 .588

The Cowboys are successful in road openers, too.  They've won 19 of 28 openers away from home.

Bad news for Cowboy fans, though, history can't pickup a blitz or hold Santonio Holmes.
