DALLAS The Dallas Mavericks. They were on top of the world as NBA champs a year ago.
On Sunday, players and fans are wondering what went wrong in just 12 months.
It doesn't seem like that long ago when Dirk Nowitzki was singing "We are the Champions," but with the way Oklahoma City swept them out of the playoffs, the truth is the Mavs are nowhere near being a championship-caliber team.
Trailing 0-3 in the series, we all knew the end was near. But the Thunder erasing a 13-point fourth quarter deficit made it seem that much more sudden.
The Mavs looked old and out-manned, and when we met with players and coaches Sunday after their exit interviews, they knew full well it's time for an overhaul.
Local product Derron Williams will be one of the Mavs' targets once free agency begins in July.
Mark Cuban broke up his title team after last season, so he now has financial flexibility to go after a "big fish" like Williams.
