So, the Rangers suffered their first shutout of 2012 last night. The primary culprit was none other than horseracing phenom Bartolo "I'll Have Another" Colon. And if Bartolo's 8 tidy innings last night were any indication, perhaps we should all get stem cell therapy when we lag at our office jobs. While I'm ok at making a pot of coffee and returning email now, I'm no 28-year old Travis. But that's not the point...
Colon has put up respectable numbers vs Texas over the past decade (15-5/3.92/130k
going into last night), but last night he looked like 2005 Cy Young Award winning, Ranger killing (4-0 vs Tex in '05
) Bartolo Colon.
He did it the way he does it when he does it: throwing strikes (77 of them), commanding the fastball(s) (Colon's two-seamer looked pretty nasty) and getting ground balls (13 of them). Not much you can do about that. But that's not the point...
Oh right... despite taking the loss, our guy looked pretty good too. Any night that Colby Lewis doesn't give up a long ball, the Rangers are going to be competitive. Last night he just didn't have the run support (2010 deja vu anyone?). Colby, similarly played his game the way it functions when it works, throwing strikes (78 of 101) and keeping the ball in the yard. Positive start, bad outcome. At least Colby went the distance and gave some rest to a bullpen that hasn't looked so caliente since a certain may 30th debacle with the Mariners in town. But that's not the point...
Dude, what exactly is your point?
The point is this: I'm a sore loser and it irritates me that Bartolo Colon shut down the Rangers last night. Bartolo freakin' Colon. The same guy who makes CC Sabathia look good in a speedo. Why did that have to get unleashed last night? And make no mistake, they keep him on a leash so he doesn't gnaw on the drywall. My point is that Bartolo Colon looks like Jabba the Hutt
. I wouldn't be surprised if a) he's an intergalactic gangster or b) this
was in his locker. I'm just sayin'. And that's all I really wanted to say.
Hopefully, the bats (and the menagerie of pitches) are there for Yu today. Go Rangers.
