Alex “Chi-Chi” Gonzalez and Joey Gallo, two of the Rangers’ top prospects, were promoted to AA Frisco this morning from A+ Myrtle Beach.

The Rangers drafted Gallo in the supplemental first round of the 2012 draft, taking the two-way prospect as a hitter from Bishop Gorman High School in Nevada. During his time with the Pelicans, Gallo hit .323/.463/.735 with 21 homers through 58 games, leading the minors in homers much of the season. He also had a much improved strikeout-to-walk ratio of 64:51, though his improvements in this area will be tested when he faces the higher caliber pitching seen in the Texas League. Gallo’s addition to the RoughRiders roster gives them three third basemen, as Gallo is joining Ryan Rua and Drew Robinson. Though Rua has played mostly third base and DH this season for the ‘Riders, with the Gallo promotion, he could potentially see some time at first, and Robinson has spent most of the season in right field.

Gonzalez was drafted in the first round out of Oral Roberts University last year, and pitched for Spokane and Myrtle Beach across 2013 and 2014 professional seasons. So far in 2014, Gonzalez allowed a 2.62 ERA in 11 starts with the Pelicans, giving up only three homers and striking out 49 in 65.1 innings. He’ll join an already stout Frisco rotation, most likely taking the place of spot-starter Ryan Bores, giving the RoughRiders a starting five of Luke Jackson, Alec Asher, Jerad Eickhoff, Edwar Cabrera, and Gonzalez.

Before the season, Gonzalez was ninth on the WFAA Top-15 list, while Gallo was eighth, though many of the prospects above them have graduated to the majors. Both Gonzalez and Gallo were picked as Carolina League All-Stars prior to their call-up, but are members of the Texas League now. Gonzalez is expected to make the start for the ‘Riders on Tuesday night, while Gallo is active on the roster as of today.
