Anaheim, CA – The Texas Rangers announced today that left-handed pitcher Justin Marks has been received on a waiver claim from the Oakland A’s.

Marks has been optioned to Triple-A Round Rock of the Pacific Coast League. To make room for Marks on the 40-man roster, first baseman Prince Fielder has been transferred from the 15- to the 60-day disabled list.

Marks, 26, has split the majority of the season between Omaha (Royals AAA affiliate) and Sacramento (A's AAA) in the Pacific Coast League, going a combined 3-2 with a 5.03 ERA (19 ER/34.0 IP) in 17 games/2 starts.  He also had one stint with Kansas City this season from April 17-20, making his major league debut for the Royals on April 20 vs. Minnesota (2.0 IP, 3 R-ER), his only big league outing to date. He began the season in the Royals organization and was acquired by Oakland in a June 5 trade for cash considerations after he was designated for assignment by Kansas City on June 2.

Marks was originally selected by Oakland in the third round of the 2009 June draft out of the University of Louisville, and was traded to Kansas City on November 10, 2010, along with right-handed pitcher Vin Mazzaro in exchange for outfielder David DeJesus.  Through last season, 88 of his first 100 appearances in the minor leagues had been starts

Fielder was placed on the 15-day disabled list on May 22 (retroactive to May 17) with a herniated C5-C6 disc in his neck and had a cervical fusion of the discs on May 27.

With today’s moves, the Rangers major league roster remains at 40 players.

Benjamin signs

The Rangers today also announced the signing of their 5th round pick from the 2014 MLB First Year Player Draft, LHP Wes Benjamin from the University of Kansas. Benjamin had “Tommy John” surgery on April 10 and has reported to the Rangers’ complex in Surprise, AZ to continue his rehab. Texas has signed 23 of the 40 players selected in the June draft, including each of the top 10 picks.
