Nick Martinez was called up from double-A Frisco to make his first Big League start Satruday. Daniel McCutchen was sent down to make room for Martinez, according to Rangers Executive Vice President of Communications John Blake. McCutchen gave up three runs (two earned) in his only appearance thus far on Friday.
Martinez will wear no. 22 for the Rangers.
Michael Choice has earned his first start for the Texas Rangers, as he will suit up to play right field and bat sixth against David Price and the Tampa Bay Rays. Choice gives the Rangers another right-handed bat in the lineup against the left-handed Price.
Mitch Moreland, the team’s designated hitter in each of the first four games, hasn’t gotten a hit off of a left-handed pitcher this season.
Alex Rios will DH Saturday to give Choice some time in the field.
Other roster notes
Josh Wilson will make his third start at second base, as he and Donnie Murphy have alternated starts at the position. Murphy has replaced Wilson in the late innings in each of Wilson’s first two starts.
Lastly, Chris Gimenez has been released. Gimenez was claimed off waivers in the final week of Spring Training and was on the Opening Day roster before being outrighted to triple-A Round Rock. He opted to become a free agent instead of becoming a member of the Express, according to Blake.
