DALLAS — You don't have to go far to find basketball fans who have an opinion about what the Mavericks should do with their 13th pick in the NBA Draft.
The downtown Dallas YMCA is a good place to start. Everyone wants the team to do better.
"Of course," said Harrison Henderson.
"I want them to get better at point guard and take out Dirk," said a young Grant Watson. "He needs to retire."
While that's not going to happen right now, experts agree that there is very little Mavericks fans have to look forward to.
When Mark Cuban blew up his championship team, he did so with an eye on this summer, and — even more so — next year.
"I know Mavericks fans don't want to hear about 'next summer' — they're tired of hearing about 'last year,'" said ESPN Radio's Chuck Cooperstein. "They don't want to hear about 2014, but the bottom line is that 2014 is going to be the draft that will be the seminal draft of the decade."
And that doesn't say much about this year’s draft. That's why they'd like to get Dwight Howard as a free agent.
"I just don't see Howard leaving there and coming here and saying, 'Well, I’ll spend my first year playing with Dirk, Shawn, Vince and eight guys named 'Herb,'" said Norm Hitzges of SportsRadio 1310 The Ticket.
To be fair, the Mavericks did have a guy named Herb once. It was Herb Williams who played here in the late 80s and early 90s.
So what players do fans think of these days when you mention the Mavericks? You might be surprised.
Every fan we stopped in downtown Dallas was unable to name at least three members of the current Mavericks team.
"Dirk Nowitzki, Shawn Marion, and I need a point guard off the top of my head... can't do it," said Joel Shanks.
It's a tell-tale sign of how quickly things have changed.
