THE COLONY — The Colony's Grant Blankenship is headed North, and his decision comes during one of the worst winters the Midwest has ever had.

"I don't know if it's a bloodline thing or something but I feel good up north," said Blankenship, whose Dad is from Chicago. "Texas-raised guys aren't really good at saying that. But I do love the north. I love the cold, and I love football up there."

The defensive end signed his letter of intent to play at Notre Dame, and his high school coach thinks it's a good fit.

"Notre Dame just went to a four-man front recently, which he's tailor-made for as a defensive end," said The Colony head coach Rudy Rangel. "(Blankenship) plays extremely fast. He's long, quick. He's just a good athlete."

Blankenship made his decision to play for the Irish last summer, after a conversation with his dad convinced him that it was a good idea to lock down a commitment early. Several months later, Blankenship has no second thoughts about playing football at one of the country's most famous and prestigious universities.

"I love football, but Notre Dame has everything and it's one thing I was looking for, and I completely got that when I committed to Notre Dame," said Blankenship. "The environment that I'm in when I'm up there, it feels very natural to me.

"His big deal is off-the-field stuff, and that's all we talk about here," said Rangel. "It's great that you're a good football player but it's more important that you're a good person, and I think he found a good fit."

A four-year starter at The Colony, Blankenship had seven sacks, an interception, and two touchdown catches as a tight end for the Cougars in 2013.
