DALLAS (AP) — A co-conspirator and cousin of former NFL wide receiver Sam Hurd has received 8 years in prison for his role in trying to set up a drug-distribution ring.

Jesse Tyrone Chavful was sentenced Wednesday in Dallas federal court.

He had previously pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to possess five kilograms or more of cocaine with intent to distribute.

Chavful admitted to trying to buy cocaine and marijuana at Hurd's request last year, after Hurd had been arrested and released pending trial.

Hurd has pleaded guilty to trying to buy cocaine and marijuana. He was arrested outside a Chicago-area steakhouse two years ago while on the Bears, after allegedly accepting a kilogram of cocaine from an undercover officer.

Hurd is scheduled for sentencing on Nov. 13.
