Former All-Star Franco to play for Fort Worth Cats

Former major league All-Star Julio Franco will join the Fort Worth Cats as a player-coach for the team’s season-opening homestand, starting Tuesday at LaGrave Field.

The Cats play the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings at 7:05 p.m.

The 55-year-old’s stint with the United League independent team will give him the designation of a five-decade professional player. He broke into the minor leagues as a 19-year-old in 1978 and last played in the major leagues in 2007, for the Atlanta Braves.

Franco will likely start as a designated hitter Tuesday, with the possibility of playing first base, said Scott Berry, the Cats’ vice president of business development....
