DUNCANVILLE — Anywhere else, Duncanville High head coach Cathy Self-Morgan would the best coach in school history. But there's a reason the basketball arena is named after Sandra Meadows.

"Her legacy... she's right up here," Self-Morgan said, raising her hands above her head. "I won't ever reach that level where I see Coach Meadows."

Meadows won four state championships at Duncanville (in 1976 and 1988-1990). Self-Morgan has three state titles since coming to the school in 2000. She also won three at Austin Westlake.

Her current Pantherettes team has won 93 games in a row — and even that is not a school record. Meadows' teams won 134 in a row, from 1987 to 1991.

"It almost feels like a college, because there's so much tradition that lies here," said senior guard Ariel Atkins. "You just want to keep it going."

Duncanville's girls basketball program has won eight state titles total, including the last two, and has 93 wins in a row, but there's only one number this team cares about: Zero.

"The number that has our losses," said DeAndra Wheeler, a senior guard. "We're trying to keep that at zero."

"They give us permission to coach them," said Self-Morgan about her players. "And that's huge in this day and age."

"We respect Coach a lot, and we trust everything she's telling us," said senior guard Tasia Foman.

The last time Duncanville lost was December 3rd, 2011. Since then they've won those 93 games in a row; only nine of those wins have been decided by single digits. Most of them have been blowouts, and they've won nearly half of them by 33 points or more.

During our interview, Self-Morgan said something about "Pantherette ball," so we asked her what that means.

"Tough. Hard. Mean. Ferocious. We want a team walking away looking back over their shoulder hoping they never have to play us again."

No doubt many of the 93 have thought that very thing.
