[an error occurred while processing this directive] Shots on goal

Best forwards: Korea-Japan hasn't seen a busier day than the one had by Senegal's El Hadji Diouf, a relentless blaze of speed and craft along the left. (Cool, subtly blond buzz cut, too.) Partner Henri Camara scored two wonderful goals.

Most tireless forward: Ireland's Damien Duff would have ruled the day if not for Senegal's fine pair. Through pure effort, he made Spain sweat. A tough character, he was nearly impossible to knock off the ball.

Most accurate prediction: Would Spain's famous case of the yips ever emerge? Aha! Spain, with superior skill, looked ridiculously nervous against the feisty Irish. The Spaniards were fortunate to move on.

Best team: Senegal continues to look well balanced, unafraid and motivated. The Lions, World Cup debutantes, can be clever, tough or individually dynamic as called upon.

Most guts: Make no mistake, blatant as Fernando Hierro's silly foul was late against Ireland, many referees lack the nerve to make that call – especially against a respected, veteran defender. Good for Swede referee Anders Frisk.

Biggest improvement: The second day of single elimination was night-and-day different from the first two (yawn) unadventurous matches.

Riskiest decision: Hoping to hold a one-goal lead, Spain yanked most of its offense when it removed Raul, Fernando Morientes and Francisco De Pedro. D'oh! Ireland equalized and Spain had little hope of scoring in extra time.

GOLAZO!

Goal of the day

Not just a Golazo, a Gol de Oro! That means Golden Goal, FIFA's preferred term for sudden-death goal. Senegal's Henri Camara took a clever heel pass, beat a triangle of defenders at the top of the penalty area then directed a shot that brushed the inside of the Swedish post.

TUESDAY'S GAMES

Japan vs. Turkey (1:30 a.m., ESPN, Ch. 23): Want to see two industrious workhorses out wide? Watch Hasan Sas on the left and mohawked Umit Davala on the right for Turkey. Key: Whether Turkey goalkeeper Rustu Recber can fight past his thigh injury. Japanese attacking midfielder Junichi Inamoto, 22, formerly at Arsenal but apparently looking, is elevating his value. Japan is fresher than its beat-up foes.

South Korea vs. Italy (6:30 a.m., ESPN, Ch. 23): Filippo Inzaghi was disappointing for Italy against Mexico, a game salvaged on sub Alessandro Del Piero's late equalizer. Which one will start alongside Christian Vieri? The indefatigable co-hosts must be intrepid in breaking down the best defense they've faced so far. Italian defensive workhorses Alessandro Nesta and Christian Zanetti are injured.
