SHOTS ON GOAL

Best game: Senegal and Uruguay took turns attacking each other in an advertisement for what these first-round closing games should be. Uruguay fell behind, 3-0, before storming back. The 3-3 draw put Senegal through to the second round.

Worst tempers: Hey, Cameroon and Germany, eight yellow cards and one red card each? Can't we all just get along?

Best escape: Germany could easily have lost – and been eliminated – but for Cameroon's junior varsity finishing. The Germans persevered and won, 2-0.

Best halftime adjustment: Ireland boss Mick McCarthy moved Damien Duff from the middle to the left side of the attack, where he found room and helped open up a tight match against Saudi Arabia.

Most efficient team: Denmark does it with crisp passing, mistake avoidance, opportunistic finishing and well-organized defending. The minivans of soccer earn few style points but make for good, solid transportation.

Worst day: Germany's Carsten Ramelow was a disaster for 40 minutes, exposed repeatedly by Cameroon forwards before his 40th minute for a second bookable offense.

Best dive: Senegal's El Hadji Diouf never appeared to make contact as he dribbled around Uruguay goalkeeper Fabian Carini. But Diouf got the call that turned into an important penalty kick goal.

GOLAZO!

Goal of the day

Uruguay's Diego Forlan smacked a looping 24-yard volley for the second goal in a stirring 3-3 tie with Senegal.
