Starving horses seized from N. Texas ranch
01:53 AM CDT on Thursday, May 14, 2009
HOPKINS COUNTY – With deputies and police officers by their side, volunteers from two animal rescue groups descended on a ranch last weekend seizing 58 Arabian and thoroughbred horses.
One of the animals had already died and two more were near death, rescuers said.
The incident happened outside Sulphur Springs off Interstate 30 about 80 miles east of Dallas.
True Blue Rescue in Washington County organized the horse rescue and helped send the animals to different facilities across the state.
The horses were found skinny and undernourished. Rescuers said the animals needed food, water and veterinary care.
The woman who owned them apparently couldn't care for them.
True Blue Rescue had reportedly been working with the owner of the horses since January, but their welfare never changed.
The group is a volunteer organization and is asking for donations to help nurse the horses back to health. To help care for the horses, the rescue group needs donations of hay, feed and money.
The owner of the horses goes to court Tuesday. The case is thought to be one of the largest horse rescues in state history.
