Weather Blog: Heavy storms move through North Texas

10:36a Get ready for possible delays if you're flying from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. The National Weather Service has issued an airport weather warning through 12:30 p.m., saying that isolated lightning strikes are possible within 10 miles of D/FW as rain with embedded thunderstorms will continue to affect area airports.

10:10a U.S. Highway 84 was closed for 90 minutes due to high water in Hamilton County this morning. A swift water rescue team was deployed to rescue four families until the water receded.

10:03a An employee at the Dairy Queen in Kemp says big trees are down at a residence next door to the store in the 1200 block of South Elm Street. Kemp is in southeastern Kaufman County.

9:57a Another lightning fire is reported, this time in Plano at a two-story home in the 4100 block of Foxdale.

9:40a Severe thunderstorms are now moving northeast at 45 mph through the northern part of Van Zandt county near Wills Point and Grand Saline, headed toward Pleasant Grove and Mount Pleasant. There remains the potential for a tornadic activity with this storm, along with damaging winds and hail.

9:37a The tornado warning for eastern Navarro and western Henderson counties expired at 9:30 a.m. The National Weather Service said the sever thunderstorm that had prompted the tornado warning weakened and was no longer capable of generating a tornado. Radar indicated that heavy rain, small hail and gusty winds were still possible from thunderstorms that will affect Athens through 10:30 a.m. A tornado watch remained in effect until 1 p.m. for eastern Texas.

9:26a A possible tornado damaged a building in the Corsicana Independent School District Monday morning. "We had an alert about 8:15 that there were funnel clouds, and in fact it looks like it hit one of our buildings, which is our staff development building where there were no children, no students," said district Superintendent Don Denbow in a phone interview with News 8. "It peeled back the roof and two office areas were exposed, and we've shut down the power at that building. Denbow said there were no injuries to anyone in the building. He added that next door is a building housing discipline alternative placement students, but there was no damage to that structure. "The kids are safe and they're still in school," Denbow said. He also said he had heard of other damage on 7th Avenue (Highway 131), an east-west route through Corsicana, but those reports were unconfirmed.

9:12a A new tornado warning has just been issued for Kaufman and Van Zandt counties until 10 a.m. The National Weather Service detected a developing tornado five miles northeast of Kemp, moving northeast at 45 mph.

8:45a A tornado warning has just been issued for eastern Navarro County and western Henderson County until 9:30 a.m. There are two potentially developing tornadoes just north of Corsicana area, moving to the northeast at 30 mph. Kerens, Malakoff and Athens are also in the path of this storm. Take cover immediately if this storm is near your area.

8:35a A spokesperson for Southwest Airlines said several early-morning flights were delayed at Dallas Love Field, but that those delays had ended by about 8:30. There were also reports of some flight delays at Dallas/Fort Worth International Aiport.

8:32a Coppell firefighters are responding to a report of a fire at a residence in the 100 block of Rainwood Drive that may have been touched off by a lightning strike.

8:27a We're still closely watching a storm that's moving northeast from Corsicana, headed toward Gun Barrel City at 35 mph. Viewers in the path can expect very heavy rain, wind in excess of 60 mph and perhaps some small hail. Storms are moving out of the Dallas-Fort Worth area, but could continue to cause problems to the south and east. A tornado watch is in effect until 1 p.m. for those counties, but it does not include Tarrant or Dallas counties.

8:15a There are more reports of high water coming in to the newsroom. In Mansfield, we're hearing of a vehicle that was washed off Country Club Road. Flash flooding is also causing problems at the intersection of Stemmons Freeway and Oak Lawn Bouevard in Dallas.

8:05a We do have some very heavy rain, strong and severe thunderstorms moving through North Texas. Radar shows the heavier thunderstorms in northeastern Dallas County near Garland and Rockwall. The storm system is beginning to pick up some intensity with very gusty winds. Severe Thunderstorm Warnings are in effect for Navarro County until 9:15 a.m.; Hill County until 8:45 a.m. Winds over 60 mph could be accompanied by cloud-to-ground lightning in these areas.

8:01a A power outage was reported in Duncanville just after sunrise near U.S. Highway 67 and Main Street. An official of the Ellis County sheriff's office said there were no immediate reports of flooding there.

7:52a We're still watching strong and potentially severe thunderstorms moving through portions of North Texas. We're watching a storm very closely in the northeastern sector of Dallas County which is moving to the east and northeast. It will bring gusty winds to the Rockwall and possibly Terrell areas heading down toward Kaufman at about 25 mph. Some pea-size hail could accompany the storm as it heads toward Greenville. Flash flooding is also reported. The Duncanville area reported more than 2 inches of rain within an hour's time.

7:48a The strongest area of rain right now is in the Garland area pushing toward Mesquite. The heavy rain is beginning to taper off in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, but there's still some high water to contend with as we go through the morning hours. Light to moderate shower activity is located in Tarrant County and areas west at this time. There could be some stronger thunderstorms later today.

7:19a High water is reported at the intersection of South Cockrell Hill Road and West Illinois Avenue in Dallas.

7a Lightning has reportedly struck the chimney of a home in the 7200 block of Jurassic Drive in Arlington, touching off a small fire on the roof of the building.
