Tarrant County store recalls cookie dough
10:42 PM CST on Sunday, February 8, 2009
DALWORTHINGTON GARDENS, Texas - More than 1,500 peanut butter products have now been recalled for possible salmonella poisoning.
Investigators say the Georgia plant behind it all knowingly shipped a contaminated product nationwide, including to North Texas.
Now, the Cookie Machine in Dalworthington Gardens has reduced their 11 flavors of cookie dough to ten. The company has voluntarily recalled their peanut butter cookie dough.
"I just hope the peanut butter recall doesn't hamper us as a growing business because we're just trying to make it during the hard times just like everyone else is," said Tonya Terrell Weideman, who owns the store.
Weideman sells the dough to local schools and churches for fundraising. After being contacted by the FDA, she issued the voluntary recall.
"I hope no one thinks this is a health problem on the Cookie Machines part," she said. "We have a great record with the FDA and health department."
Weideman's peanut butter comes from the Peanut Butter Corporation of America, which is based in Georgia. Federal investigators say the company shipped out the peanut butter knowing it could make people sick.
The Justice Department has opened a criminal investigation into the company.
"I am done with peanut butter at this time," Weideman said. "I don't want to confuse the public by going out and getting a different kind of peanut butter."
Refunds will be made for those who bought the peanut butter cookie dough from the Cookie Machine.
