FBI: 'Honor killings' possible motive in teens' deaths
11:00 PM CDT on Tuesday, October 14, 2008
For the first time, the FBI is officially saying two teenage girls allegedly murdered by their own father may have been the victims of an honor killing.
Yasser Abdel Said, a fugitive wanted by the FBI, has been at large ever since his two daughters were found shot to death nine months ago.
Seventeen-year-old Sarah Said and her 18-year old sister Amina, both of Lewisville, were discovered dead in Mr. Said's taxi, which was parked in a Las Colinas hotel parking lot.
Some North Texas Muslim leaders say calling it an honor killing is inappropriate.
"There is no honor in killing number one," said Mustafaa Carroll, with the Council of American-Islamic Relations. "But how do you determine an honor killing without a suspect without a trial without anything? You have to have motive to know what the reason was."
Back in January, the girls' relatives said the father killed them because he felt they disgraced the family by dating non-Muslims and acting too western.
