Clash over drilling plan divides FW neighborhood
11:19 AM CDT on Wednesday, September 3, 2008
FORT WORTH - An upscale Fort Worth neighborhood known for its historic homes could soon be the home of a less likely sight. A stream of industrial trucks may soon come lumbering through the area to build and supply a drilling rig.
The proposed site is located in the back of Greenwood Cemetery's property, which is right next to the Crestwood neighborhood.
Now, some desperate neighbors are pushing for another route that would go right through the cemetery property itself.
Chesapeake Energy needs city council approval to build the drill site. The biggest sticking point is just how trucks will get in and out.
Chesapeake prefers Rockwood Park Drive, which runs past homes, a park and a ball field. That has some residents concerned for the safety their children.
Frank Diaz and Robert Hayes have been friends more than 25 years, and have lived in Fort Worth's Crestwood neighborhood longer than that. But for all they agree on, they have found themselves on opposite sides of the argument that now divides the neighborhood.
"There is a good chance there could be an accident," said Hayes, the Crestwood Association president.
Diaz disagrees, saying no one will be hurt "if people can be careful."
Emotions are so high, one neighbor, Troy McKelroy, couldn't drive by the News 8 interview in progress without pulling over to give his own opinion.
"There are plenty of us that are vehemently against it," McKelroy said. "So, I hope that our neighborhood stands against it."
Another option would be to bring traffic through the Greenwood Cemetery property.
"I can tell you this, I would hate to be there burying one of my loved ones and a big 18-wheeler comes running down the road," Diaz said.
Regardless of the route, a Chesapeake spokesperson said drivers are always trained to make safety their number one concern.
The council is expected to vote on the site next week.
Chesapeake said the well is needed to get to minerals under the cemetery and Crestwood. They also said truck traffic would only be heavy in the first three months of the drilling operation, which at its peak, would be 50 trucks a day.
