The victim was shot outside his DeSoto apartment early Monday.

DeSOTO — Police in DeSoto said a man was shot by another man attempting to steal his car early Monday morning.

The victim, identified as Roderick Butcher, 36, later died at Methodist Medical Center in Dallas.

The shooting was reported outside Butcher's apartment on East Wintergreen Road near North Polk Street around 3 a.m., police said.

The victim heard his car alarm blaring and went to check. Police said Butcher discovered a man attempting to steal his car and was shot in the back with a small-caliber handgun.

It appeared that Butcher had been trying to run away when he was shot.

Investigators indicated that the car was stolen after the shooting, and the suspect remained at large.
