Campaign against Latino grocery

The leaflet is unsigned.

Farmers Branch residents have been urged in unsigned leaflets delivered to their homes to oppose alleged plans for a grocery store which would cater to the city's Latinos.

It is the latest chapter in the row over immigration in Farmers Branch.

Flags adorn several homes on Ginger Lee's street, one of the nicest in Farmers Branch.

But the note she found under her flag, Lee sees as anything but American.

"What it says to me is just pure hate," she says.

It is unsigned asking neighbors to call Minyard Food Stores to tell them people don't want a Carnival food store to fill the empty shell on Josey Lane - Carnival is the Minyard's brand that caters to Latino tastes.

"[It's all to do with] this mess at City Hall," says Lee.

She's referring to the anti-illegal immigration protests, leading to a May election, that could ban illegal immigrants from living in Farmers Branch.

Leaders in that movement say they aren't against Carnival - they just doubt it would fit here.

"We should have a store here that would accommodate all the ethnic diversity we have in our community," said Tom Bohmer from Support Farmers Branch.

The odd thing about this controversy is that it appears Minyard has no current plan to put a store here.

The real estate agent trying to lease the property says that is just one of several companies he's talking to.

Minyard says it's being swamped with calls from both sides of the issue but officially won't speculate.

"To me it probably means I won't get a neighborhood store. I don't know why anyone would put one in," said Lee

It's one more issue splitting this already divided town, where immigration simmers beneath the surface.
