DALLAS — Darrell Arthur was the star power forward on back-to-back state championship teams for South Oak Cliff. He's better known now as the star player for this year’s national champions, the Kansas Jayhawks.

But a News 8 investigation is raising questions about whether Arthur should have graduated from South Oak Cliff at all. The questions center on his Algebra 1 and 2 classes at South Oak Cliff.

Transcripts and grade changing forms obtained by News 8 appear to support claims made by a former teacher that Arthur missed many classes and was awarded passing grades he never earned.

That teacher, Winford Ashmore, says he was approached by then-principal Donald Moten and current head coach James Mays Jr. to change Arthur's grades. "These people knew what was going on with a lot of this type stuff, and yet they covered up for it," Ashmore said.

Moten resigned from the district following the first News 8 investigation into improper grade changing. He declined to answer our questions about the Arthur allegations.

Coach Mays also declined to speak to News 8, but on Friday he did speak with ESPN Radio host Michael Irvin and Kevin Kiley, saying neither he nor Moten did anything wrong.

“I'm saying there is no wrongdoing as far as we are concerned," Mays said. When asked if he could provide proof of that, he responded with: “Most definitely.”

Mays declined to go into details citing an ongoing DISD internal investigation.

DISD officials would only release this statement:

The Dallas Independent School District's Office of Professional Responsibility is continuing to investigate allegations of grade changing at South Oak Cliff High School. We are committed to conducting a fair and thorough investigation and will withhold any further comment until that investigation is completed.
