Police: Wrong-way bicyclist spits on Denton officer
01:07 PM CDT on Friday, July 3, 2009
DENTON -- Police say a woman riding a bicycle on the wrong side of the street early Thursday cursed an officer, called him obscene names, refused to cooperate, fought with him and finally spit on him and his squad car, incurring several charges and a trip to the city jail.
According to a police report, the officer said he was on patrol about 3 a.m. in the 2500 block of West Prairie Street when he noticed Andrea Longino riding the wrong way. He pulled in front of her and attempted to stop her but she took evasive action with the bicycle and would not stop.
She yelled obscenities at the officer and threatened to shoot him, according to the report. At that point, he told Longino she was under arrest and to put her hands behind her back. She replied with more curses and threats, according to the report. He called for another officer and began trying to handcuff her, but she fought with him and he was not able to control her until the second officer arrived.
Once they had her in handcuffs, the officers placed her in the back seat of a squad car. She began spitting all over the car and eventually spit on the officer as he tried to control her, according to the report.
Another officer arrived with a "spit sock," which is made of material that allows someone wearing it to breathe and see but doesn’t allow liquids out. On the way to the police department, the woman taunted him, saying he wasn’t able to do anything about her spitting, the report stated.
Longino was charged with resisting arrest, retaliation, harassment and riding a bicycle on the wrong side of the street.
