FW police chief suspends operations with Texas alcohol body

WFAA-TV staff reports

FORT WORTH - Police chief Jeffrey W. Halstead has suspended all operations with the Texas Alcohol Beverage Commission (TABC) until a better understanding is gained of the events that occurred at a gay bar.

Last weekend's sweep of the Rainbow Lounge by Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission agents and Fort Worth police left one patron, Chad Gibson, in hospital.

Both the police and the TABC have announced internal investigations.

Halstead said he wanted to learn about the historical relationship between the TABC and the Fort Worth Police Department.

In the coming weeks, he will conduct meetings with TABC officials in an effort "to establish clearly defined roles and responsibilities of each organization with the intent to better serve the community in conducting inspections," a statement said.

Sunday's incident has sent shockwaves through the gay community.

It came on the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall riots in New York, where patrons at a gay club clashed with police. That incident is generally believed to have given birth to the gay-rights movement.
