Shelter opens to house Haltom City residents with no AC

11:54 AM CDT on Wednesday, July 1, 2009

WFAA-TV staff reports

The American Red Cross Chisholm Trail Chapter will open a shelter Wednesday at noon at the Christian Center of Fort Worth, 4301 NE 28th Street, Fort Worth, Texas 76117.

The shelter is being opened upon the request of Haltom City Emergency Management to temporarily house residents of the Jane Lane Apartments (3001 Jane Lane) in Haltom City.

The apartment complex experienced a power failure affecting several buildings on Saturday. While electricity is expected to be restored by the end of the week, temperatures are forecasted to reach 100 degrees or higher in the days ahead, creating an unsafe environment for the apartment residents.

Although this event does not constitute a disaster, it is considered a community emergency.

Families and individuals staying at the shelter are advised to bring basic emergency and personal items. Such items include bedding, pillows, essential medications, other health-related items, extra clothing, toiletries, hygiene items and a toy or activity for any children who may be staying in the shelter.
