Clinic closes at Craig Ranch in McKinney

A medical clinic at McKinney's Craig Ranch has shut down, putting the brakes on plans to build a community, where seniors could live, play and stay healthy.
When it opened in October of 2007, The Cooper Clinic was branded the "gold standard" in preventative medicine. It was a part of a larger community designed as a place where retirees could live across the street from their doctors and fitness center.
The Cooper Aerobics Center at Craig Ranch is thriving. But when the recession hit, the Cooper Clinic, which does not collect health insurance, suffered. It didn't grow enough to keep open.
Complicating the dream even further, the developer that was going to build the houses, pulled out due to financial problems. "Unfortunately, the economy has affected all of us and it affected us as well", said Dr. Tyler Cooper, the CEO of the Cooper Aerobics Center.
Developer David Craig says his huge development north of state highway 121 in McKinney is still very much on track. "If you look at our region and you look at the local economy and compare it to the nation, we're faring very well and Craig Ranch is doing well, all things considered," said Craig.
The developer says even though Cooper Life is no longer viable at Craig Ranch, the development is still committed to wellness with fitness centers and a system of hike and bike trails.
Dr. Cooper says he still is high on the concept of Cooper Life. He said, "while it may not happen at Craig Ranch, it will happen eventually when the time is right."
