Sexy outfits of Cockrell Hill's 'beer babes' spark protest

COCKRELL HILL - It's a fight involving alcohol in a North Texas town but it's not the drinks that have neighbors upset - it's the people selling them.
Managers actually think their workers are dressed rather nicely, considering the job.
But their outfits have neighbors furious. They are promising to force an election, if the workers don't cover up.
Tempers spiked Saturday afternoon, as protestors met for a show-down with managers of nearby liquor stores.
"Beer sells itself, you don't need girls out there, selling. It's just immoral. I don't think it's right," said Paul Lemus, a protestor.
About a dozen neighbors protested several Cockrell Hill liquor stores who use so called "beer babes": women that wear provocative outfits to attract customers.
"We're not asking for you to get rid of them, or completely shut down your business. All we're asking for is a dress code, for them to dress more appropriately, because we have children here," said one protestor.
Parents worry about their kids, since a school is nearby.
But the women aren't doing anything illegal and managers say they've already made changes, like telling the women start work after school ends.
"You can't look at the girls themselves. You see more skin at a Mavericks game or a Cowboys game, watching the Cowboy cheerleaders," said Chris Cleveland, store manager.
But concern is growing.
Cockrell Hill just approved alcohol sales only two years ago. Now other businesses worry about a backlash, since protestors are threatening to force the issue back to a ballot.
"This is an opportunity for the community to have economic development, based on the trade-off of selling alcohol, but the community at some point is going to say 'we're not going to put up with that if we have hoochie girls dancing in the streets,'" said Don Silverman, a business owner.
