Some residents in North Texas spent the day mopping up water, removing debris and cleaning out storm drains after heavy rains moved through.

The heavy soaking led to flash flooding, high-water rescues and evacuations near the Texas-Oklahoma border and caused local officials to keep a wary eye on the skies.

Approximately 35 homes and 15 businesses had water damage in Gainesville, but that damage was minimal compared to 2007 when three people were swept to their deaths in the flood-prone Pecan Creek.

The city opened two shelters during the flooding. Those shelters were closed today, local officials.

Authorities don't know what started a fire at an animal kennel in Southmayd, but the local fire chief said there were numerous lightning strikes.

The National Weather Service expects a quiet, muggy spring day Friday with increased chances for rain over the weekend.
