FORT WORTH - A Fort Worth family has expressed outrage after a mentally ill man died over an hour after his mother called 911 for medical help.

Michael Jacobs Jr. was tasered by police and later died. His family said officers ignored his medical condition and sent the first ambulance away.

While they admit the 24-year old was out of control early Saturday morning, they said he has a history of mental illness and had not been taking his medication, which is why his mother called 911.

"She stated that it was JPS Hospital that she wanted them to take him to," said Carol Morris, Jacobs' cousin.

MedStar said they responded at 10:35 a.m. to a suicide attempt. At 10:54 a.m., police officers told MedStar to leave.

Twelve more minutes passed, and according to a police report, Jacobs was combative. A female officer used her taser on him, which was when he started to have problems breathing.

At 11:06 a.m., officers called MedStar back to the scene for a sick person. Four minutes later, an ambulance arrived and took Jacobs to JPS by 11:37 a.m.

At noon, Jacobs was pronounced dead, which was an hour and a half after his family originally called for medical help.

"It is serious and we are concerned," said Frank Moss, a council member from District 5.

An autopsy didn't reveal a cause of death, so it will take six more weeks to run toxicology tests. In the meantime, the focus will be on the internal police investigation.

Moss said those in his district can be confident in the investigation “because we are concerned that we have good information."

Moss has been briefed by police three times. The new chief said he will give a report Tuesday morning during the executive session.
