City Hall hears accusations of DART racial hiring
11:57 AM CST on Thursday, January 8, 2009
Allegations of hiring discrimination at the DART transit agency have now spilled over to Dallas City Hall.
Community leaders, frustrated over the lack of action by DART officials are now asking Dallas City council members to investigate.
Former DART employee Rebecca Williams is among at least five people who have filed federal discrimination complaints against their old bosses.
Williams says she was fired after complaining about being ordered to hire Hispanics under qualified for the job.
Her allegations were brought to light in a News 8 investigation last November.
Since that time African American community leaders have met with DART officials looking for answers and found nothing but frustration.
"It's as if they are trying to act like this is not happening and this is crazy and we are not going to go away," said Rev. Ronald Wright, Dallas Commons.
Now, those same community leaders are taking their complaint to city hall in hopes city council members will take an interest.
"We are coming today to ask for your support and your help and please call for a third party investigation into those hiring practices," said community leader Lavar Thomas.
Hoping to spark a furious response, Thomas and the group of concerned citizens instead walked away, again, feeling frustrated.
Afterward, only council member Dwaine Carroway appeared to reach out.
'The mayor needs to do something about this," he said.
But Carroway and other council members' powers are limited to appointing eight of DART's 15 board members.
This means the most likely venue for getting the issue resolved is not Dallas City Hall but in court.
